Wine Cellar
Diagnostics & System Sizing
Not sure why your cellar is too warm? Considering a new cooling system but unsure what size? We perform comprehensive on-site evaluations — temperature and humidity analysis, BTU load calculations, insulation assessment, and equipment sizing recommendations backed by measurements, not guesswork.
Diagnostic Evaluation Scope
A thorough assessment of your cellar environment, cooling system, and insulation quality.
Temperature & Humidity Analysis
Multi-point temperature measurement throughout the cellar (top, middle, bottom, near walls, near door). Humidity readings at multiple locations. We identify hot spots, cold spots, and areas where humidity is outside the 60–70% target range.
BTU Load Calculation
We measure the cellar dimensions, assess wall insulation R-values, account for glass surface area, lighting heat output, door frequency, and ambient temperature differential. The result is a precise BTU requirement — the number that determines what size cooling system your cellar actually needs.
Insulation & Vapor Barrier Assessment
The cellar envelope is half the equation. We evaluate wall construction, insulation type and thickness, vapor barrier presence and continuity, door seal quality, and any thermal bridges. Poor insulation makes any cooling system work harder and fail sooner.
Existing System Evaluation
If you already have a cooling system, we diagnose its current condition: refrigerant pressures, compressor health, electrical performance, airflow patterns, and whether the unit is properly sized for the space. Many cellar problems are caused by undersized or poorly installed equipment.
Equipment Recommendation
Based on BTU calculations and your preferences (noise, aesthetics, budget), we recommend specific equipment: brand, model, capacity, and configuration type. We explain why each option fits your cellar and provide honest comparisons.
Written Report
Every diagnostic visit produces a written report with measurements, findings, calculations, and clear recommendations. You keep the report regardless of whether you proceed with our services — it is yours to share with builders, designers, or other contractors.
Why Proper Sizing Saves Money
The most expensive mistake in wine cellar cooling is guessing the size. Online BTU calculators give rough estimates based on cubic footage alone — they do not account for insulation quality, glass surface area, exterior wall exposure, or the fact that a cellar above a garage in Los Gatos experiences very different ambient conditions than a basement cellar in Santa Cruz.
An undersized system runs constantly. It cannot reach 55°F during Bay Area heat spells, the compressor overworks, and the unit fails in 3–5 years instead of 10–15. The replacement cost is $2,000–$8,000 plus another service call — more than the cost of proper sizing from the start.
When to Request a Diagnostic
You should request an evaluation if you are building a new cellar, replacing a failed system, noticing your cellar running warmer than expected, experiencing humidity problems (too dry or too wet), hearing unusual noises from the cooling unit, or simply wanting a second opinion on a proposal from another contractor.
