High Priority — Collection at Risk

Wine Cellar Too Warm?
Protect Your Collection

Your wine cellar temperature has risen above the ideal 55°F range. Wine is a living product — sustained heat accelerates aging, damages flavor compounds, and can push corks. Even a few degrees above 65°F for more than a few days risks permanent damage to your collection.

Common Causes

Wine cellar cooling systems operate in a narrow temperature band. Small issues cause noticeable temperature rise.

1
Cooling Unit Stopped Running
The most obvious cause — the unit tripped a breaker, lost power, or failed. Many homeowners don’t notice because wine cellar units run quietly. Check if the unit is actually running — put your hand in front of it and feel for airflow.
2
Dirty Condenser Coil
Wine cellar cooling units accumulate dust in closets, mechanical rooms, or wall cavities where they exhaust heat. Through-wall units are especially prone — the back side collects dust in the adjacent room. Reduced heat rejection = higher cellar temperature.
3
Exhaust Room Too Hot
Through-wall units reject heat into an adjacent room. If that room has no ventilation or gets hot in summer, the unit can’t reject enough heat. Bay Area homes in Los Gatos, Saratoga, and Atherton often have cellars with inadequate exhaust ventilation.
4
Insulation or Vapor Barrier Failure
Wine cellars require proper insulation (R-19 minimum) and a vapor barrier on the warm side. If insulation was skimped during construction or the vapor barrier is damaged, heat infiltrates faster than the cooling unit can remove it.
5
Undersized Cooling System
The cooling unit is too small for the cellar’s heat load. This is common when cellars are expanded, insulation is inadequate, or the original BTU calculation didn’t account for factors like glass doors, exterior walls, or lighting heat. The system runs 24/7 but can’t maintain temperature.

Safe Checks You Can Perform

Verify the unit is running. Feel for cold air from the supply. Listen for compressor hum. Check the breaker and power supply.
Check the condenser side. For through-wall units, go to the room on the other side. Is the grille blocked? Is the room hot? Vacuum any visible dust from the exhaust grille.
Check the exhaust room temperature. If it’s above 85°F, the cooling unit is struggling. Improve ventilation — open a door, add a fan, or run the home’s AC in that room.
Check the cellar door seal. Is the door closing fully? Is there a gap? Even a small gap lets warm air in continuously. For glass doors — check the gasket and make sure the door latches securely.
Check thermostat setting. Was it accidentally changed? Some units have a reset button — try cycling power: off for 30 seconds, then back on.

Signs You Need a Professional

Unit runs constantly but cellar stays warm — undersized system, refrigerant leak, or insulation failure. Needs professional BTU load assessment.
Unit won’t turn on — compressor failure, control board issue, or electrical problem. Requires diagnosis.
Temperature swings more than 3°F — see our temperature fluctuation guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Wine is safest at 53–57°F. Sustained temperatures above 65°F accelerate aging noticeably. Above 70°F, chemical damage begins within weeks. Above 80°F, corks can push out and wine can cook within days. If your cellar is above 65°F, move valuable bottles to a wine fridge while you schedule repair.
Common repairs: fan motor ($200–$400), refrigerant recharge + leak repair ($400–$1,000), control board ($300–$600), compressor ($800–$2,000). Full unit replacement: $2,000–$6,000+ depending on system type and cellar size. We diagnose first and provide an upfront quote. Learn more about wine cellar repair.
