Slip Hazard — Address Immediately

Ice Machine Leaking Water?
Find the Source & Stop the Damage

Water pooling under or around your commercial ice machine. Beyond the slip hazard and health code risk, standing water damages flooring, promotes mold growth, and can short-circuit electrical components.

Common Causes

Where the water appears tells you a lot about the source.

1
Clogged Drain Line
The #1 cause. Ice machines drain water constantly during harvest and purge cycles. Scale, slime, or ice blockages cause water to back up and overflow. Check the drain first — this resolves the issue about 50% of the time.
2
Overflowing or Cracked Drain Pan
The condensate pan under the machine collects drips and condensation. If it cracks, overflows, or the machine isn’t level, water spills onto the floor. Common after the machine is moved for cleaning and not re-leveled.
3
Loose Water Supply Connection
The water inlet fitting or supply hose can loosen from vibration over time. Even a small drip from the back adds up fast in a commercial kitchen. Check the connection at the back of the machine.
4
Bin Overflow
If the bin level sensor fails or is blocked, the machine keeps making ice when the bin is full. Ice overflows and melts on the floor. Also happens when staff packs ice down, blocking the sensor.
5
Stuck Dump Valve
Ice machines purge mineral-heavy water between cycles. If the dump valve sticks open, water flows continuously — even when the machine isn’t actively making ice. You’ll hear water running constantly.

Safe Checks You Can Perform

Identify the water source. Front = bin overflow or door. Back = supply line or drain. Underneath = drain pan or condensation.
Test the drain. Pour a cup of water into the drain trough. If it backs up or drains slowly, the line is clogged. Warm water may clear a minor blockage.
Check the ice bin level. Clear ice above the sensor line. Make sure the bin sensor arm or eye is unobstructed.
Tighten the water supply fitting. Check the connection at the back. Hand-tighten if loose. Look for corrosion or a cracked hose.
Verify the machine is level. Place a level on top. If it tilts forward, water runs to the front instead of the drain. Adjust the feet.

Signs You Need a Professional

Water runs continuously even with machine off — stuck inlet valve or dump valve. Requires valve replacement.
Drain clog won’t clear — heavy scale or biofilm deep in the line. Needs professional drain cleaning.
Leak returns after tightening connections — internal water circuit issue: cracked sump, water pump, or evaporator leak.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most common cause is a clogged drain line — scale and slime block water flow, causing overflow. Other causes: cracked drain pan, loose supply connection, overflowing bin, or stuck dump valve. Check the drain first — it’s the issue about half the time.
Yes. Standing water in a commercial kitchen is a health code violation in Santa Clara, San Mateo, and Santa Cruz counties. It creates a slip hazard and promotes bacterial growth. Inspectors flag equipment water leaks as a priority item.
