Ice Machine Not Dropping Ice?
Ice Forms But Won’t Release

Your ice machine is running and ice forms on the evaporator, but it won’t release into the bin. The harvest cycle isn’t working properly. This is different from not making ice at all — here the freeze cycle works, but the release fails.

Common Causes

The harvest cycle uses hot gas or warm water to release ice from the evaporator. When it fails, ice stays stuck.

1
Scale Buildup on Evaporator
Mineral scale from Bay Area water creates a rough surface that ice sticks to. Even when the harvest cycle runs correctly, ice can’t release cleanly from a scaled evaporator plate. This is the most common cause and the reason quarterly descaling is critical.
2
Hot Gas Valve Failure
Most ice machines use a hot gas valve to redirect warm refrigerant to the evaporator during harvest. When this valve fails or sticks, the evaporator stays cold and ice won’t release. You may hear the machine cycle but no ice drops.
3
Water Curtain Problem
Cube-style ice machines use a water curtain that flows over the evaporator during freezing. If the curtain is misaligned, damaged, or the water pump is weak, ice forms unevenly — thick in some spots, thin in others. Thick spots won’t release during harvest.
4
Harvest Timer / Sensor Failure
The machine uses a timer or temperature sensor to determine when ice is thick enough and when to start harvest. If the sensor fails, the machine may try to harvest too early (ice too thin, breaks apart) or too late (ice too thick, won’t release).
5
Low Refrigerant
Insufficient refrigerant means the hot gas cycle doesn’t produce enough heat to release ice. The harvest attempt runs but ice stays frozen to the evaporator. The machine cycles endlessly without filling the bin.

Safe Checks You Can Perform

Look at the evaporator plate. Open the machine and observe a freeze cycle. Does ice form evenly? Is there visible white mineral scale on the plate surface? Scale = needs professional descaling.
Watch a harvest cycle. After ice forms, the machine should switch to harvest mode. You should hear a change in sound and see ice start to release. If the machine just keeps freezing without harvesting, the control board or sensor may have failed.
Check the water curtain. Is it intact and positioned correctly? Is water flowing evenly across the evaporator surface? Uneven flow = uneven ice = harvest problems.
Check the water filter. A clogged filter reduces water flow to the evaporator. Less water = thinner, uneven ice that doesn’t release properly. Replace if overdue.

Signs You Need a Professional

Visible mineral scale on evaporator — needs professional descaling with food-safe nickel-safe solution. DIY descaling can damage components.
Machine cycles but never harvests — control board, harvest sensor, or hot gas valve failure. Requires diagnostic equipment.
Ice forms unevenly — thick on one side, thin on the other. Water distribution, water pump, or evaporator plate issue.
Ice partially drops (broken or slushy) — harvest cycle is too short or weak. Hot gas valve underperforming or low refrigerant charge.

Frequently Asked Questions

The most common cause is mineral scale buildup on the evaporator plate — ice sticks to the rough surface and can’t release during harvest. Other causes: failed hot gas valve (harvest cycle doesn’t warm the evaporator), water curtain misalignment, or harvest sensor failure. Professional descaling resolves the scale issue; mechanical failures need a technician.
Professional descaling and deep cleaning typically costs $200–$400 depending on machine size and condition. It includes descaling the evaporator, sanitizing the water system, cleaning the condenser, and inspecting all components. Done quarterly, it prevents most ice machine problems.
