Wine Cellar Cooling

Los Gatos has more wine cellars per capita than almost any other city in Santa Clara County. From hillside estates along Shannon Road and Kennedy Road with dedicated cellar rooms to downtown Victorian renovations with closet-conversion wine rooms, the range of cellar configurations here is enormous — and so is the range of cooling challenges.

Hillside homes face unique issues: many cellars are built into the slope below the main living level, which provides excellent natural insulation but creates condensate drainage problems. Water has to be pumped up and out, and when condensate pumps fail, water accumulates in the cellar. We see this pattern 3–4 times per year in Los Gatos hill homes alone.

Newer construction in Belgatos and Almond Grove typically has purpose-built wine rooms with through-wall WhisperKOOL or CellarPro units. These are generally well-installed but still need annual maintenance — especially condenser cleaning when the exhaust side faces landscaping that sheds pollen and leaves.

Common Los Gatos Cellar Issues

Condensate pump failures in below-grade hillside cellars, inadequate exhaust ventilation on through-wall units recessed into tight utility closets, and aging Breezaire units in 1990s-era homes that need replacement with modern WhisperKOOL or CellarPro systems. We also see wine rooms added during remodels where the HVAC contractor installed a mini-split instead of a purpose-built wine cooling unit — these run too cold, provide no humidity control, and freeze wine near the discharge.
