Walk-In Freezer Ice Buildup?
Frost on Coils, Walls, or Ceiling
Excessive frost or ice forming inside your walk-in freezer — on the evaporator coils, walls, ceiling, or around the door frame. This always indicates a problem that will worsen over time and eventually lead to complete cooling failure.
Evaporator completely iced over?
That’s a defrost failure — cooling will stop soon. See Freezer Not Freezing.
Common Causes
Ice buildup in a freezer is always caused by moisture entering the space or the defrost system not removing frost effectively.
1
Failed Defrost System
The defrost timer, heater, or termination switch has failed. The evaporator coil accumulates frost after each cooling cycle, and without defrost, it builds into a solid block of ice. This is the #1 cause and requires professional repair.
2
Door Gasket Failure
A damaged gasket allows humid air to enter the freezer continuously. The moisture freezes on the coldest surfaces — the evaporator coil first, then walls and ceiling. Ice on walls and ceiling is almost always a door seal issue.
3
Door Left Open or Ajar
Even 10 minutes of an open freezer door during delivery introduces enormous amounts of humid air. In the Bay Area’s coastal climate, humidity is high — all that moisture freezes rapidly. Staff training on door discipline is critical.
4
Failed Door Frame Heater
Walk-in freezers have heater wires embedded in the door frame to prevent ice from sealing the door shut. When the heater fails, ice forms around the frame, breaks the gasket seal, and lets in more humid air — creating a worsening cycle.
5
Clogged Drain Line
The defrost drain carries meltwater out of the freezer. If it freezes or clogs, water pools and refreezes on the floor and around the drain area. This is a common winter issue and can cause a slip hazard.
Safe Checks You Can Perform
Check where ice is forming. On the evaporator coil = defrost issue. On walls/ceiling = moisture infiltration (door seal). Around the door frame = frame heater failure. On the floor near the drain = clogged drain.
Inspect the door gasket. Close the door and look for gaps or light around the edges. Test with a dollar bill. Check for torn, compressed, or missing sections of the gasket.
Feel the door frame. It should be slightly warm (heater wire active). If the frame is cold or has ice forming around the seal, the frame heater has likely failed.
Check the drain area. Look at the floor near the drain. If water is pooling and refreezing, the drain line is likely frozen or clogged. Pouring warm water down the drain may clear a minor blockage.
Review door habits. Ask staff: is the door being propped open during deliveries? Is the strip curtain intact? A functioning strip curtain reduces moisture infiltration by up to 80%.
Never chip ice off evaporator coils. Using tools to remove ice can bend aluminum fins and puncture refrigerant lines. Let a technician thaw the system safely. You can carefully remove ice from walls and floors.
Signs You Need a Professional
Ice on evaporator coil — defrost system failure. Requires diagnosis of timer, heater, or termination switch.
Door frame heater not warming — heater wire or contactor failure. Needs electrical diagnosis and replacement.
Ice buildup returns quickly after cleaning — the root cause (moisture source or defrost failure) hasn’t been addressed.
Temperature rising along with ice buildup — the ice is blocking airflow and the system is losing capacity. This will become a complete failure soon.

Frequently Asked Questions
Ice buildup is caused by either moisture entering the freezer (damaged door gasket, door left open, failed frame heater) or the defrost system not clearing frost from the evaporator coil. Check where the ice is forming to narrow the cause: coil = defrost issue, walls/ceiling = moisture infiltration.
You can carefully remove ice from walls, floor, and ceiling. Never use tools on the evaporator coil — the aluminum fins are delicate and refrigerant lines run through the coil. Damaging them causes a refrigerant leak that costs hundreds to repair. Let a technician handle coil defrost.
